Yoga Workout on Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit Plus Yoga Pose. I appreciate the feedback from the game and the instruction!

I’ve been having problems with my IT band syndrome again since the McCall 40 race a week and a half ago.  I’ve seen my chiropractor for Graston therapy, taken some rest days, started doing the Myrtle Hip Strengthening workout to loosen up those tight hip abductors again and this morning I pulled out a tool I hadn’t used in 422 days (according to my Wii Fit Plus when I plugged it on and climbed on the balance board today!)

I had forgotten how handy this personal trainer disguised as a video game could be! I used to use this a lot more a couple of years ago when I lived in another home with a roomier living room space!  My current living room has about 5 x 6 of floor space so it’s difficult to really stretch out my arms overhead while lying on the floor or when doing poses like Spinal Twist.  It’s even more difficult when accompanied by the two cutest yoga partners in the planet — my 6 and 8 year old daughters, who joined me today!  But, we had a good time, I got to work on my stretching and relaxing and the girls had fun doing “laps” under my Mommy Bridge when I was doing Downward Dog (they stopped for kisses too, which was pretty cute!)

I’ll be using this tool again more now that the boys showed me again how to set the darn thing up again (what can I say – I’m 40 and rarely play video games so I need refresher courses every now and then!) 😀

Wii Fit Plus – Yoga and Strength Training

I love my Wii Fit Plus! Every single time I start doing the Yoga with the female trainer, I feel my entire body start to slip into a state of bliss. Her soothing voice, the calming music and the stretching of my body, the focus on my posture all just put me into a calming, serene place. I love it and I can always tell that my body overall feels so much better after doing some yoga. 20 min of yoga today. Was surprised how flexible I’m feeling this time. I could touch my toes easily and that wasn’t the case a few months ago when I did this. Nice! I especially enjoyed dancer pose, half moon, tree, triangle, warrior, sun salutations, downward dog and the cobra and bridge today.

Next I did 20 min of strength work on Wii Fit Plus. Lots of single leg work working the core and balance, jackknives, push ups and side planks.

After that I did 10 min of advanced boxing (which honestly I am awful at since it requires so many memorized steps and I have a dreadful memory! I really do wish the boxing was a little more constant and had less of the silly side-to-side ducking moves. I crave more constant, heart-pumping like the final bit where it’s a free for all and I can just punch to my heart’s content. THAT part I love! I should get a DVD on boxing! I’d probably really enjoy it!

I did 10 min of Super Hula Hoop after that and THAT is where I got the best workout of all today! I always think of the Karate Kid movie when I’m doing the Hula hoop (wax on, wax off!) When I’m doing the first 5 minutes twirling those 4-5 hoops to the right I feel like my bum is “waxing on” and it really burns the abs and I can feel my hips loosening up. It’s awesome! Then it switches and you twirl the 4-5 hoops the other direction. That’s when I picture my bum “waxing off!” 🙂 It feels a little bit like dancing the Samba -lots of hip action and that feels really fun and is so beneficial to a runner – since we runner types tend to have type hip flexors that need loosening up! My hair was plastered against my face and my heart was beating by the time the 10 min were up! I scored my TOP score ever on the game today! Yay!

I finished up with a downward dog, a sun salutation and finally one turn on the Penguin Slide – my favorite little “fun” game that works the core and balance areas. My Wii piggy bank then turned GOLD and told me I’d spent a total of 40 hours using it since I first bought it! Sweetness!

Wii Fit Plus

One hour of Wii Fit Plus today.  Lots of yoga, some jackknives, planks, pushups, 10 min of Super Hula Hoop which really gets the heart pumping, Advanced Step, and then a few minutes of fun stuff like Penguin Slide, Ski Jump and Soccer.

Wii Fit Plus Yoga, Strength and Super Hula Hoops

30 min. 4 stars on Super  Hula Hoops and Jack Knives. Yay! 🙂 Love how the yoga and the hula hooping loosens up the tight hip flexors. The kids always want a turn after they see me “playing” with the wii fit plus!  Anything that encourages them to implement more movement into their day is a positive as far as I’m concerned. Jr’s in love with the boxing. I think I should do that one next time. It’s a great workout! Rebecca’s still the champ by 3 spins on the Super Hula Hoop. Guess I’ll have to spin harder next time. haha

Wii Fit Plus Yoga and Strength

30 min Wii Fit Plus. Mostly yoga poses with a few planks, side planks and v-sits in for good measure. I love how peaceful the female instructor and the background music make me feel. Ahhh…  The perfect gentle, easy workout after a long run yesterday.

Wii Fit Plus Yoga and Strength

The Wii Fit Plus told me it had been 65 days since I’d worked out with it. I could totally tell during my workout today. My arms were shaking on the planks and side planks, my abs were feeling it and the yoga poses were more wobbly.  But, it felt good to be back at it. My lower back and my shoulders have been really sore lately and yoga makes both of those areas feel more stretched out and soothed.  I also love the voice of the Wii Fit Trainer. She speaks very soothingly and that settled my mind during those 35 minutes despite all the noise from the kids going on around me. 🙂

I can really tell that my body is beaten down from all the miles and climbing and last night’s track race. I feel tired. Very tired. I may have to cancel my Saturday morning long run and get some recovery instead.

If Rocky and Lucille Ball Had a Child

And the child had none of Rocky’s talent but all of Lucy’s enthusiasm – I’m convinced I’d be that child.  Today’s workout was with my Wii Fit Plus.  I did the rhythm (or in my case LACK of rhythm boxing), yoga, arm strength moves and super hula hoops to loosen up the hips. It’s always great to get a sweat on from a video game. 🙂

Musings of a Wood Floor

Oh, wooden floor

So slippery and smooth

Plank pose in bare feet

I feel my grip lose

Slip, slide, hips coming to floor

Not very graceful.

It’s just like before.

While lying on yoga mat

Stretching my back

I count dust bunnies, of those I have no lack!

Barbie brushes, pony holders, Legos and dirt

Other women must have cleaner floors

I cringe at the work!

Five children are mine, so messy and sweet

I wouldn’t trade them for clean floors any day

Though to work out without all this mess would be a treat!
