I did it! I pushed harder the entire race this time instead of holding back. I can’t believe I did it!  I felt great. It was hot and I had a cramp after the second water stop in my side, but I just stayed focused. There’s also a pretty bad hill in mile 3 — but I let myself keep the same intensity but not panic when my pace went down at all.

The ending was awesome! I’d been watching this little kid (maybe 12?) running way ahead of me in a green shirt. I didn’t think there was any way I’d catch him, since he was a good 1/2 mile + ahead of me for most of the race. In the last 1/4 of a mile, I kept my pace steady and was able to close in on him, then pass him, I kicked into gear for my final sprint across the finish line and the cute little boy just bolted right by me again hitting the chutes maybe 1-2 seconds before I did. It was a great ending and I congratulated him on a nice kick.

I can’t believe I get to say this — but I earned my first place medal today! I got 2nd place in the women’s 30 – 39 category! How did that happen?!!! Last year I ran the same race in 1 hr 2 min, so this was nearly a 10 min increase over last year’s time! Wow! I’m so happy!!!!!!

My Splits:
Mile 1: 8:15
Mile 2: 8:25
Mile 3: 9:26 (the big hill and a water stop)
Mile 4: 8:23
Mile 5: 8:48 (second water stop)
Mile 6: 8:27
Final .2 — pace of 6:26 Yeah, baby!!!

Ok, I’ll reveal my “secret” time I was aiming for — I wanted to hit 53 minutes today and I BEAT IT!  Score! Yes!  I knew I could do it!!!!!!!

Oh, and one more thing – my buddy who beat me last year with her 53 min came in about a min behind me this year. I was so shocked. I’m getting better at this!

I made friends with the gal who came in 1st place in the 40 – 49 category (she’s 42.) She came in behind me too, but we bonded since she had to stop and throw up 4 x during the race. I cheered her up afterwards by sharing my ultra diarrhea story.  Another pal of mine came in 2nd place in the 20 – 29 category and also was about a minute behind me. I can’t believe I’m running times like this gals I’m so impressed by! I’m so excited!
